Now that our season has come to an end it’s time to scribe another newsletter, so read on for…NEC & Ally Pally shows, short breaks, our first journalist, details of our 2009 longer tours, exchange rates, off road and Della.

.

We had a stand at the NEC bike show earlier this month, thanks to so many of our previous guests for saying hi. We were really busy – perhaps because we declared it a ‘doom & gloom free zone’ or, more likely, as we offer different trips to the others. We took lots of bookings and Mick MacDonald of Compass Expeditions, Australia (so there was no cheating) picked out Martin Brijs’ winning entry into our draw. Martin & his girlfriend will be visiting us in May.We’ll be at the Ally Pally bike show 28 Feb to 2 March 2009, please come and see us on stand T12 and have a petit Calva.
Aussie Mick does the business.

We never thought Bike Normandy would be so successful ! Last year was yet again our busiest ever. We ran our first longer tours to the Châteaux of the Loire & Cher and another to see the tall ships Armada in Rouen. Both went as well as we could have hoped for and it was a welcome change for us not to have to cook for everyone at the end of the days riding. Please see the ‘Tours Testimonials’ page on our website for the excellent feedback.

Our short weekend breaks continued to be as popular as ever and now over 80 of you have been at least 3 times, Tony Prime is becoming part of the family having booked for his 10th and 11th visits next year! He was here at the beginning of May when we managed to get 10 places on a ‘Honda Day’ at Le Mans. We were the only Brits there and rode 4 laps on a CBR600 and 4 on a CBR1000RR – merci Honda for a fantastic morning on the Bugatti Circuit. At the other end of the scale we had our most expensive bike visit, it wasn’t the Ducati 1098R in May but a £35K Harley.

Quick Harley riders!

The first journalist to visit us was Philip Sharpe – the chairman of Morton’s Media - who joined a group in August and wrote a very complimentary article in the November edition of Motorcycle Sport & Leisure magazine – to read it visit the ‘Press Coverage’ page on our website. We thanked him for the article and he e-mailed;

“I am so pleased that you liked the article and that you have had some positive inquiries. It was a genuine reflection of my appreciation and enjoyment of the holiday. It suited me completely - enjoyable riding against the backdrop of the Normandy landings! I still can't believe that we did so much in such a relaxed manner”

Extracts from our visitors’ book regarding our short breaks;

“I can’t believe that I haven’t done this until now !! Brilliant. Thanks” – Kevin, West Sussex.
“It was so good the first time we had to come again” – Dave & Angie, Barnsley.
“If you want to bike in France, there is no better place than Bike Normandy…” - Ron, Doncaster

Longer Tours

After their success this summer we’ve decided to run some more in 2009…full details on our website.
We are the only company who run trips that include all entries and a luggage van which follows the same route - allowing you to enjoy your bike in comfort and visits to the sights and race meetings are unencumbered. Compare the price and what’s included on a Bike Normandy Tour.

27 May to 2 June - Chateaux & Sancerre Wine Festival – see ‘Testimonials’ on our website from the 2008 tour.

15 to 20 June – an extended tour to the WW2 Sights – we’ve been asked to run this by many guests. The trip will include Pegasus Bridge and the landing beaches, then it’s off to St Nazaire to see the U-boat pens and Oradour sur-Glane where the Germans massacred 642 villagers.

21 to 26 August – our second extended trip to the WW2 Sights.

2 to 8 October – WSB at Magny Cours and Reims for champers.

We’ll also be visiting Rouen with rideouts to Honfleur and Monet’s Gardens - 18 to 21 May and again 27 to 30 July.

Then in July 2010 we’ve had enough interest to run the Dangerous Tour – this includes a bungy jump, track time at Magny Cours, parascending, white water rafting and finally the opportunity to run the bulls in Pamplona for two days !!!

We received fantastic feedback, please look at our website, but here’s a small selection…

 “Thanks once again for a great tour. A fantastic holiday with superb rides, great company, good food and top class organisation. We will be back.” - Mick and Chris, Kent  - Sancerre tour in May

“Just to say that I enjoyed the whole trip. It was very well organized, good company and wonderful roads. I will be looking at your website and you may very well see me again.” – Graham, South Wales - Sancerre tour in May

“It is very difficult to express my gratitude to you both for a fantastic few days. The whole trip was superb, from our first meeting at the ferry to our departure (which came too soon).”  Tom, Rochdale – Rouen Armada

“Thank you ever so much again for a really superb break – a really balanced experience - superbly planned, excellently executed and fantastic value for money” Daffyd, Oxfordshire – Rouen Armada

When we set up Bike Normandy in 2003, one £ Sterling was equal to 1.6 Euros, it has been diminishing since then. The £ sterling / Euro exchange rate has plummeted by nearly 25% in the past year and now stands at it’s lowest level ever of 1.11 euros for a £ sterling. We’ve toyed for some time with pricing in Euros but don’t think it’s fair on our guests. So we’ve decided on the following;

Short breaks next year will increase by just 4% or £10 to £249 PP this is fixed and will not alter.

Longer tours are individually priced and we’ll guarantee these for anyone booking and paying their deposit before 31 January 2009.

At least two other touring companies have ceased trading recently in this small market. We do not want to be the next and so very reluctantly we may have to increase the prices of our longer tours if the interbank £ Sterling / Euro rate does not recover to 1.20 Euros by the end of January.

Off Road

It’s getting harder to ride legally in the UK so many people are now riding abroad. There are lots of lanes in this area and our guides know most of them. We offer two different weekends – the Suisse Normande is much more technical than when we ride near the Seine. Both cost £249 for two days of riding, 2 nights accommodation, breakfasts, dinners and all evening drinks.

What some of our guests this year have said…

“I’ve never laughed so much as I did in Normandy. Had a fantastic time…” – Lee
“Thanks for a great weekend everything was spot on. Sitting at my desk in dreary Basingstoke and I am shattered” – Paul
“It just wouldn’t be possible to cram any more quality riding, top food, top cider and great laughs into one weekend” – Rich

Our Dogs

.
Della at 3 ½ months old

We had two Springer Spaniels in the UK that we brought to France with us. Many of you will have played with Ellie and Spencer. Sadly, aged 12 and 11, they both passed away this year from tumours.

So I recently went to Metz (near Luxembourg) to pick up a bundle of fluff that we’ve called Della. It’s tradition in France that all cats’ and dogs’ names start with the same letter for the year they were born. This year it’s D, next year E etc. Della is a Bernese Mountain Dog and will (rapidly) grow large enough to pull cheese carts in Switzerland – if we had any and if we lived there, that is!
